Evolution & Organization of Duty Gear

This is an online only (virtual) training course that familiarizes the student officer with recent history of duty gear as well as health, safety and security concerns of contemporary gear placement. Multiple gear platforms are discussed along with the pros and cons of duty gear placement.

The course includes a PowerPoint slide show that corresponds to the two training videos. The total viewing time for the videos is approximately 30 minutes broken down into two approximately equal segments. For viewer’s reference there is also a downloadable PDF version of the PowerPoint presentation, perfect for use in taking notes. A course syllabus and extra reading resources are also included in the training materials.

There are no prerequisites for attending this program.

Course Sequencing:

This course is a personal-knowledge-only (no continuing education or in-service credits) program. It is recommended that the student officer view/attend the following courses before viewing this one:

Course Objectives:

• Upon completion, the student officer will be able to identify safety concerns regarding carry positioning of the duty sidearm and the EMD/TASER tool.
• Upon completion, the student officer will be able to identify health concerns regarding carrying duty items on the center back area of the duty belt.
• Upon completion, the student officer will be able to identify the need for redundancy in duty tools, specifically flashlights and extra sidearm magazines.
• Upon completion, the student officer will be able to identify concerns regarding the placement, use and evidentiary value of body worn cameras and footage.
• Upon completion, the student officer will be able to discuss concerns about strong side vs support side carry/placement of various tools.
