General Defensive Tactics Introduction

An introduction to the basic defensive tactics programs to follow in the OVA.

This is an online only (virtual) training course that introduces the viewer to training weapons, the Tueller Drill (commonly called “21 foot rule”), defending from a grounded position and the differences between pain compliance versus body mechanics. The pros and cons of training weapons are discussed with a focus on the benefits that can be provided if they are incorporated into training early enough in an academy setting. The research of Dennis Tueller and the resulting 21 Foot Rule is reviewed and it’s demonstrated how an opponent inside, and much farther away than, 21 feet armed with an edged weapon or bludgeon weapon presents an immediate threat. Methods of defending from a grounded position and proper concerns for regaining a standing position are discussed and demonstrated. Finally, the difference between body mechanics and pain compliance is demonstrated and discussed with a focus on showing the benefit of using body mechanics for subject control.

The course includes a PowerPoint slide show that corresponds to the four training videos. The total viewing time for the videos is approximately 22 minutes broken down into four segments. For viewer’s reference there is also a downloadable PDF version of the PowerPoint presentation, perfect for use in taking notes. A course syllabus and extra reading resources are also included in the training materials.
